# What you owe, and what is due next

> Money you borrowed, money you lent, and everything you are paying off in installments, each with the amount left and the date it is next wanted.

## An installment plan is not a subscription

Buy now pay later is how a lot of real spending happens, and most finance apps have nowhere to put it. Filing a Valu plan as a monthly recurring charge loses the two facts that matter: how much of it is left, and when it ends.

In Safi each purchase is its own account. It shows the remaining balance, this month's payment, the pay-by date, and how many payments are still to go. A reminder arrives three days before one is due.

## Borrowed and lent, with the direction stated

A debt page says You owe or Owed to you outright, shows how much of the original amount is still left, and flags a pay-back date you have gone past.

Record payment and Borrowed more are the first things on the page, because they are what you came to do. Each one moves money between your own accounts, so paying off a debt never shows up as income or as spending on your charts. That distinction is the whole reason to model debt as an account rather than as two ordinary transactions.

## What is due next, on the Dashboard

A card on your Dashboard lists the payments coming in the next week, and closes until something changes. It is the same question a subscription list answers, asked about the money you have already committed rather than the money you keep renewing.

When a plan finishes, close the account. Closing keeps the whole history, takes it out of your totals, and you can reopen it later. Deleting is a separate, deliberate act.

- Each installment purchase is its own account with a remaining balance
- A reminder three days before a payment is due
- Paying a debt moves money between accounts instead of inflating your spending

## Questions people ask

**Does it work with Valu and Klarna?**

Yes, and with any installment plan. Safi does not connect to the provider; you enter the plan once and it tracks the remaining balance, the next payment and the pay-by date from there.

**Why does paying a debt not count as spending?**

Because the money was already counted as spending when you made the purchase. Counting the repayments too would double it and make every chart wrong. A repayment moves money between your accounts instead.

**Can I track money I lent to someone?**

Yes. Lent debts show as Owed to you, with the amount outstanding and a flag when the pay-back date has passed.
