# A target, a date, and whether you are on pace for it

> Saving toward nothing in particular is how the money ends up spent. A goal with a date attached turns it into a number you can check.

## The date is the part that works

A goal without a deadline gives you no way to be behind on it, which sounds kinder and is the reason it never finishes. Safi asks for a target and a date, works out the pace that reaches it, and tells you when you have drifted off that pace.

It does not nag beyond that. Being behind on a savings goal is usually a decision, not an oversight, and an app that treats it as a failure gets muted.

## Where the money actually went

The Cash Flow view separates what you spent from what you moved into savings from what is still sitting unspent. That is the honest version of a good month: the difference between income and spending is not progress until some of it has actually moved.

Money you move into a goal leaves your spendable balance and stops flattering your Dashboard, which is the whole point of moving it.

- One savings goal on the free tier, unlimited on Pro
- Progress shown against the date, not only against the target
- Savings show separately from spending in Cash Flow

## A goal is not a budget

The two get confused, and they answer opposite questions. A budget is a ceiling on money leaving: it exists to stop something. A goal is a floor under money arriving somewhere: it exists to start something. Safi keeps them apart because putting a limit and a target on the same screen makes both of them ambiguous.

In practice you want both, and they work on each other. Coming in under a budget is what produces the money a goal needs, which is why the Dashboard shows you the budget pace and the goal progress rather than making you choose which one to look at.

## Questions people ask

**How many goals can I have?**

One on the free tier, which is enough to find out whether you will use the feature. Pro removes the cap.

**Does Safi move the money for me?**

No. Safi never touches your money or your accounts. You record the transfer, and Safi tracks the goal against it.

**What happens if I fall behind?**

Safi tells you, once, with the pace you would now need. It does not keep reminding you.
